I check where the drive firms up and where a soft shoulder after rain won’t bear the weight, then decide whether the box truck rolls back or a shuttle handles the last leg. Come summer the crew starts early and carries water, because the heat at the mountain’s foot is merciless by midday.

Once I’ve seen the place, the price settles fixed and on paper and it holds there, whether a cramped park lane or a long desert approach eats into the day. There is no fuel surcharge and no per-mile entry creeping aboard after the load is up.
